The iPad is a fun and powerful tool, but it’s also a security risk. Below are some simple rules you can follow to make sure your iPad’s security is kept at a high level.
Create a Passcode
To set your iPad passcode, go to Settings > Passcode. Tap Turn Passcode On, and enter a passcode. You will be prompted to reenter it.
Remember to use a strong passcode, and change it frequently.
Set a Maximum Number of Passcode Attempts
If your iPad is ever stolen, you may want all of your personal information on your iPad to automatically erase so it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. You can set your iPad to auto-erase itself after 10 failed passcode attempts.
To set your maximum number of passcode attempts before all of your data erases, go to Settings > Passcode. Turn Erase Data on. You must first turn your passcode on for this feature to be enabled.
Turn on the iPad Auto-Lock Feature
The iPad auto-lock feature automatically locks your iPad after it has been inactive for a certain number of minutes.
To turn on the auto-lock feature and set the number of minutes, go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock.
Don’t Install Untrustworthy Apps
Keep in mind that Apple does not test all third-party iPad apps so it’s up to you check the Internet for reports about security vulnerabilities with any non-Apple product you install. The best thing to do is to search on the app name and research any possible vulnerabilities.
Disable Bluetooth When Not in Use
If you keep the iPad’s Bluetooth short-range wireless continuously running, such as when using an external wireless keyboard, this is an open door for hackers.
To disable this connection, go to Settings > Bluetooth > Off.
Engrave Your iPad
There are companies out there that will laser-inscribe your iPad with your name, a distinctive phrase, or even a logo. People have found this to be a great deterrent, since few people want a stolen iPad with someone else’s name on it.
Install an App that Tracks Stolen iPads
There is a free app called Find My iPhone that you can install that acts as a beacon if your iPad should ever be stolen. First, install this app on your iPad. If it’s ever stolen or lost, you can install the free Find My iPhone app on another Apple iOS device, launch it, and sign in with your Apple ID. You’ll see your device’s location on a map, and can choose to have it display a message or play a sound, remotely lock the device or delete all of its data.
